Lee told me the only way he would dress up with us girls is if he could wear a military uniform. I choose the Royal Horse Guards uniform to make as it covered all the Victorian era and is still worn today even though it is only ceremonial. I spent days on end hand stitching all the gold frogging on and making sure that both sides were mirrored perfectly. The uniform is made of a dark navy blue wool with red cotton collar and trouser stripe.
The front of the waist length jacket was the hardest part and trying to figure out how the pattern on the sleeves went was fun but we got there in the end!
The back of the jacket is also decorated. I read somewhere that these jackets use to be quite plain but the Horse Guards got bored so they started sewing braid onto their uniforms for something to do and obviously it became part of the final look. Not sure how true that is though. They look good anyway!
